Dearest: My guest tonight is Aaron Tabor, M.D., Medical Director of Physicians Pharmaceuticals, a group of mainstream medical doctors trained at top health institutes, such as Johns Hopkins. Dr. Tabor directed the team of physicians that developed Revival Soy Protein, a patented manufacturing process that allows a single small serving of Revival to naturally contain the same amount of plant estrogens found in a pound of tofu. Revival delivers the benefits of soy without the usual bulk or bad taste. Physicians Laboratories conducts human clinical studies using Revival Soy Protein at premier medical institutes. Studies include the effects of soy isoflavones on breast, endometrial and prostate cancer. Revival is now recommended by more doctors than any other brand of soy and holds numerous patents. Dr. Tabor believes that patients have the right to learn about nutritional management therapies from their physician or other health care providers, not the college kid at the health food store. Physicians Laboratories is dedicated to making soy an accepted mainstream nutritional option. Revival has quickly become the #1 Doctor- recommended soy protein. Dr. Tabor, it's always a pleasure to welcome you back to Power Surge. Dr. Aaron Tabor: Thank you Dearest! Dearest: Dr. Tabor, I'm going to put you on the spot here. Say, you've come across a doubting Thomas -- what are the five most important claims you could make about soy and using Revival Soy protein? Dr. Aaron Tabor: That is a good question! We are often asked about soy's numerous benefits. Here's the list:
Dearest: Regarding your last remarks about calcium. We know that soy may help with osteoporosis. Is it true that the calcium in soy is absorbed just as well, if not better, than the calcium in milk? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Milk is an excellent source of calcium (many Revival Soy shake users mix their shake with milk). Studies show that adding adequate calcium to soy products produces equal absorption to milk products. Interestingly, a study has suggested that you lose less calcium in your urine when eating soy versus milk, thus you spare more calcium. Additionally, a well-designed study just published shows interactive beneficial effects of taking soy and calcium together for bone health. Dearest: Revival states that human studies confirm that soy consumption does not harm thyroid function, yet the controversy about soy and thyroid function suppression persist. There are numerous studies that soy does not negatively affect thyroid function, yet there are those who continue to insist it does. Do you know if there's ever been a documented case of soy being the proven substance that caused hypothyroidism? Dr. Aaron Tabor: No, there are not any human studies showing soy causes harm to the thyroid. The FDA dismissed such claims back in 1999 as inconclusive. We haven't seen problems in Revival customers either that would make us think this. And, let me add, that several recent human studies looking at this issues have NOT found any negative effect. Of course, every woman, whether using soy or not, should have regular thyroid tests under the care of her physician, as 1 out of 10 women are likely to develop hypothyroidism. KatyB: How long does it take to reap the benefits from your Revival Soy products? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Many customers report results within days to weeks for menopausal symptoms, energy and weight loss. If you are looking for cholesterol reduction, then expect several months. Soy isn't a miracle cure, but it is quite amazing that the little bean has so many beneficial properties. It is the only vegetable protein that is "complete" meaning it supplies all essential amino acids, and it is the only vegetable that has more protein than carbohydrates. JanisPalps: I am 42 years old and am in early menopause according to my bloodwork and symptoms. I had a period a year ago then one more this past June that was terrible with phantom feelings of periods all the time and monthly with horrible side effects. I have hot flashes getting worse by the day and the heart palpitations send me to the ER more often than not. I had a full cardiac workup and heart was cleared as fine. The feeling of palpitations in my chest going into my throat is so scary. Will soy help? I heard that red clover helps but unsure. I'm on Klonopin for panic attacks but it doesn't help when the hot flashes and palpitations are bad and it used to help. What can I do? I refuse synthetic HRT and my doctor isn't helping me. I'm losing my mind, having anxiety attacks and I feel too young to be feeling so bad. Can you help me? Do you know about red clover extract helping palpitations? Dr. Aaron Tabor: I'm sorry to hear that you are having, such a difficult time right now. I am not aware of studies that have examined soy and heart palpitations, but if you doctor feels they are related to estrogen deficiency, then soy may support a healthier transition phase for you. It sounds like you need to get a new doctor who will respond better to your needs! And, make sure you have a good physical to make sure this isn't something more serious. I am not aware of studies on red clover and this either. But, God bless you and I hope you are feeling better soon. Dearest: The palps are related to menopause and if she uses Revival, they'll eliminate her symptoms and Janis, use magnesium, 500 mg. twice a day for the palpitations. I had horrific palpitations for years during perimeno. Just horrific, keeping me up all night, driving me insane. JanisPalps: Mine are horrific. Yes, in your throat right? Dearest: Yes, everywhere, but Power Surge always recommends getting a checkup by your personal health care practitioner to be sure there are no other problems. JanisPalps: I will, thank you. I feel just awful all the time. I will try Revival Soy and magnesium. Thank you Dr. Tabor and Dearest! Dearest: You'll be okay, Janis. GlendaS: I was vegan for many years and added dairy back to my diet about a year ago. Soy products (in moderate amounts) seemed to give me tummy aches (diarrhea). Are the capsules/tablets likely to upset my tummy? Dr. Aaron Tabor: A small number of people are not able to digest vegetables well, but we have found that a digestive enzyme that helps break down the soy works wonders! It is called our "Digestive Enzymes" product. I wouldn't advise using only isoflavone tablets because the research is fairly clear that soy protein PLUS soy isoflavones give you the best benefits. Jane25: I love your soy pasta! It's the best and I don't have to eat much because it makes me fuller faster than other pastas. Like a lot of people I'm watching carbs. Is yours lower in carbs than regular flour or wheat pasta? Thank you. Dr. Aaron Tabor: I'm glad to hear you are enjoying it! Yes, not only is our Revival Soy pasta 25% lower in carbs than regular pasta, but it also has twice the protein. That is why it fills you up! And, the soy pasta is a great way to add more soy to your family's diet. As you can tell everyone here, the texture is wonderful (unlike some of the low-carb pastas sold in grocery stores). Lumina500: In the past several months, and even with very regular exercise, my breast size has gone up a cup or 2, leaving me very uncomfortable and odd-looking for my small-medium frame. Does soy help this or what can be done to reduce my breast size? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Lumina, I'm not aware that soy has any effect on increasing or decreasing breast size. Some recent studies have shown that soy consumption does not increase mammogram density (which is a good thing). You should consult your own doctor. Alphafe: I'm about to start a natural perimenopause regime. Is it possible to take in too much soy? Dr. Aaron Tabor: The FDA did not set upper limits of soy intake in 1999, and numerous human toxicity studies have not found toxic effects even at extremely "high" dosages of soy isoflavones over 1000 milligrams per day. Of course, we recommend that every woman integrate the use of soy into her health plan along with the help of her own physician for maximum benefits. Dearest: Dr. Tabor, why are you better off getting your soy from food or natural food supplements, such as Revival, than from using soy pills? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Any soy product that gives you both soy protein AND soy isoflavones is superior to soy pills. This is because soy contains a complex mix of phytonutrients that are also beneficial. For example, the protein can give you energy and help you feel full, while the isoflavones can help support better bone health. KatyB: Is there a correlation between too much soy and breast cancer? I think I read this somewhere a while back. I am 45, how much soy do you suggest for night sweats? Dr. Aaron Tabor: No study has documented that soy causes cancer. The latest data from Wake Forest University, using a monkey model that is the standard for studying hormone replacement therapy, showed that soy does not have an estrogenic effect in the breast or endometrial tissues. The monkeys were consuming 400 milligrams of soy isoflavones per day. Critics of soy told the FDA that the "phytoestrogens (isoflavones)" in soy could cause harm, but the FDA did not agree with them when it issued the official soy heart health claim in 1999. Of course, as we state on every package, if you have an existing condition, we recommend you consult your own doctor before use, and that is a good practice for any dietary supplement. And, for your "how much" question, just 1 Revival bar or shake, which contains the amount of soy isoflavones found in 6 cups of a typical soymilk, is all that is needed! As many here will tell you, Revival's taste is excellent (we say it is soy without the soy taste), so enjoying 1 bar or shake each day is easy. We have our fabulous new low-carb chocolate peanut butter paradise bar that is already one of our best sellers after only a few weeks. Dearest: Sounds delicious. Chocolate peanut butter paradise bar - low carb? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Yes! Only 6 grams of carbs, but 17 grams of protein. It is our best tasting bar ever. We spent about 2 years getting the flavor right on this bar. EggClair1: Going back to palpitations: is the magnesium alone what I need to take or is it used with the Revival Soy? Where do you buy Revival Soy products, such as pasta? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Consult your doctor about adding soy and magnesium to your diet together. To buy Revival products, simply visit The Revival Web site. Dearest: I've used soy and magnesium together for years - Revival and at least 500 mg. magnesium. They say when it spasms, give it magnesium. It's been shown to be excellent for palpitations and migraines - both common complaints during perimenopause. Lumina500: I've had a rash on my chest for several months now. My doctor doesn't know what it is. I've tried poison ivy treatments, etc. I've heard many friends say that it is related to fluctuating hormones or a poor immune system. Does soy eliminate this type of problem? Dr. Aaron Tabor: I'm not aware of any studies showing that soy would help a rash. I think you should probably try a new doctor. Dearest: Lumina, you can have a rash like that while going through perimenopause. I started having all sorts of rashes and skin problems. Lumina500: Oh! What did you do about them? Dearest: Let me put it in one simple sentence. My mother told me the strangest things will happen during menopause and they do. Don't get alarmed. I used the normal things you'd use for rashes and forgot I was going through perimeno and eventually they went away. Everything doesn't have a cure. I would make sure to clean out the toxins in your body. Try going on a liquid diet for a day or two once a month. Jane25: It is very scary, it seems these days studies say just about everything causes breast cancer. I don't think soy would but I am for sure staying away from conventional HRT. Dr. Aaron Tabor: About 85% of women now choose not to use conventional HRT. This has created a large demand for "alternatives". The word "alternative" doesn't mean that a "natural" option has the same benefits or risks as a prescription drug. Anything used besides HRT would obviously be an "alternative" since HRT isn't being used. We recommend women work with their physician to find the best combination of prescription medication and foods/dietary supplements for optimal health. Dearest: Dr. T., for those who experience gas and/or bloating from the Revival Soy shakes, would they fare better with the soy bars? Dr. Aaron Tabor: The best option is to divide the shake or bar into smaller portions and to add our digestive enzyme if needed. I don't think the bars produce a better/worse scenario than the shakes. An important point to remember is that with continued soy use, it appears that your digestive tract 'learns' to absorb more of the beneficial phytonutrients. GlendaS: When should a person start on your products? At the first sign/signs of peri- menopause? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Glenda, soy has many benefits for women well before perimenopause occurs, for example, weight loss, energy, bone support and heart health, so it isn't ever too early to begin supplementing your diet with healthy soy protein. Jean1618: Can Revival help me lose weight without using it as a meal replacement? And can Revival help lower my blood pressure? Dr. Aaron Tabor: We recommend you use Revival Soy as a supplement, so you can take a multivitamin with it and enjoy it with fruit or other items. As an in-between meal supplement, soy protein is great for controlling hunger cravings. Our bars, shakes and soy chips are excellent for this. Anyone with high blood pressure should consult their own physician. Several studies suggest that soy may help support healthier cardiovascular system, but Revival Soy is not a cure or treatment for any medical condition. Often, blood pressure can be improved by losing weight and exercising as part of your overall plan. EggClair1: Do I go to an endocrinologist or cardiologist or a gynecologist to talk about soy being added to my diet? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Most women speak with the doctor that knows the most about menopause. A gynecologist would be great. Loon777: Are your products okay for Diabetics? Dr. Aaron Tabor: We have delicious Splenda-sweetened shakes and low-carb bars that have a low-glycemic index, Loon. Lumina500: I've had some symptoms that appear to be thyroid related. However, when I got my thyroid checked, they said it was normal. A naturopath acupuncturist told me that deficient thyroids don't always show up on lab tests. Can you have a slightly poor thyroid and not have it show up on tests? Does soy help the thyroid? Dr. Aaron Tabor: For Lumina, the standard thyroid test is reliable. I would have your family physician check your thyroid levels using standard tests. Human studies have not shown that soy harms the thyroid. Dearest: Lumina, make sure you have a TSH and T4 and T3 tests done. A TSH isn't enough alone. Dr. Tabor, thanks so much for joining us again tonight to field our questions about Revival Soy, menopause, how our health can benefit from Revival Soy in general. - Heart Health. The FDA approved a soy heart health claim in 1999 that 25 grams of soy per day, as part of a diet low in cholesterol and fat, could lower the risk of heart disease.
- Menopause. There are over 14 clinical studies now documenting the positive benefits of soy and/or soy isoflavones for menopause symptoms.
- Weight Loss. Many studies show that protein helps you feel fuller longer (snacking is a prime reason of diet failure).
- Energy. Soy is a good source of energy from soy protein and it has a low- glycemic index meaning that it doesn't cause rapid increases in blood sugar, and finally
- Bone Health. Many recent studies show that soy supports better bone health, particularly when taken with calcium. Let me add that soy isn't a replacement for medication, and as we have advised for almost 8 years, women should work with their their own physicians to get the most out of Revival Soy.
