OnlineHost: Julia Elliott has entered the room. Dearest: My guest tonight is Power Surge's "Soy Source" - an expert in the area of phytoestrogens, an alternative means for replenishing our diminishing hormone levels. She's the author of two books on soy, "Beating Menopause & Early Ovarian Failure With The Help Of 1 Natural Ingredient" and "With A Little Help From The Soybean." Dearest: It is my pleasure to welcome back to Power Surge ...... J U L I A E L L I O T T Dearest: Julia Elliott has been an outspoken advocate of soy and natural means of coping with our menopausal issues. Welcome back, Julia Elliott :) Let me begin by sharing the question I get asked most about phytoestrogens (and I'm sure you do, too) ... how much, and in what form, do we need to consume phytoestrogens in order to effect restored hormone levels? Thanks :) Julia Elliott: Thank you Dear and I thank everyone for being here tonight. As far as the amount needed we have to experiment. Everyone is different and what works for some may not work as well for others, so the dosage must be increased. You should start out slowly and increase it gradually until testing and symptoms show changes. Dearest: Thanks, Julia Elliott... give us an example of what you take daily in the way of soy and other phytoestrogens, ok? Julia Elliott: Elliott: I consume a cup of soybeans a day in my daily meals via the whole soybean used in the recipes I already make. For instance, veggie chili is modified with soybeans in place of or along with the kidney beans. Dearest: I use mostly tofu, Julia Elliott, I'd imagine most women do. What do you think? Julia Elliott: Dear, tofu is a good way to get the properties, and it is a great source of calcium. Some do get reactions to the properties that tofu is processed with, but tofu is a great way to add it to your diet. Dearest: Yes, I've heard that. Thanks, Julia Elliott. Norlee, go ahead, please :) Norlee: Where can we get whole soybeans? Julia Elliott: Nor, you can get them at your health food stores - right out of the bin. Dearest: Red, go ahead, please :) Redfencer: How long for results to show? weeks? months? :) Julia Elliott: They vary. Mine showed a difference in symptoms in a week and a half. The tests showed a difference at my next regular 6 month trip to the Dr.'s office. I knew what he was going to say because the symptoms had already improved. Dearest: Terrific, Julia. Thanks... Dearest: Joan, go ahead :) Joan5000: How about Chinese food, soy sauce, etc? Julia Elliott: Joan there are no values in the soy sauce, too much MSG, and too over processed. But a great flavor enhancer if you use the non MSG and low sodium type. Joan5000: I was afraid of that, thanks. Dearest: Thanks, Julia. Pazz, go ahead, please. Pazzeria: Cant find whole soybeans in bin, found packaged ones is that ok? They look tan, is that right? Julia Elliott: Paz :) The packaged ones are ok, but test them for freshness. Talk to the clerk and try to find the origin of them and when they were shipped. Yes they are tan in color. If they are firm to the feel and there isn't a lot of dust residue present, then they should be ok. Pazzeria: They are firm alright, thanks. Dearest: Julia, share with us the best sources of soy - e.g., tofu, miso, etc. Thanks. Julia Elliott: Dear, there are many sources of soy out there, like the ones you you mention. But I prefer the WHOLE soybean, so I don't have to guess at the properties, and know what I am consuming - as far as the additives and the preservatives that go into making some of these foods. Dearest: What sort of negative side effects have women complained about from tofu? (other than that it has no taste) Julia Elliott: I have heard that some have experienced a rash or hives. That is mainly because of of the processing agents used in making tofu. Some have a reaction to the calcium based processing used in tofu. Dearest: Thanks, Julia... Catalina, go ahead, please :) Catalina5: What tests for estrogen are you talking about? Estradiol? Julia Elliott: Hi Cat :) I am talking about TOTAL Estrogen here. Catalina5: Are phytoestrogens tested ? Julia Elliott: Haven't seen that test yet but, the reading for the Estrogen will reflect the estrogen present, whether it be synthetic or plant form of estrogen. Dearest: Julia, how do soy and phytoestrogens effect the progesterone levels in our bodies? Julia Elliott: Dear, phytoestrogens are a plant form of estrogen that mimic estrogen. They go to the many estrogen receptors in our bodies that are void of estrogen and replace it, naturally without the side effects that are associated with the synthetics. Dearest: Thank you, Julia..... Dgordon, go ahead with your question, please. Dgordon97: What symptoms were relieved? does it help mood swings? Julia Elliott: Dg, it relieves many of the meno symptoms, including mood swings hot flashes, head aches, weight gain, water retention and more. Dearest: Julia, any thoughts on women on HRT also using phytoestrogens? Julia Elliott: Dear, there are some that are successful in using soy when trying to wean one off of the synthetic form, but I have not heard too much on this subject other than one particular case - a woman who is doing a personal case study herself. I did not want to go this route, because I wanted a true reading of my levels when I approached soy. I wanted to know where I really stood before adding the soy gradually and watching the results. If you are using both HRT and phytoestrogens, you do not have the element of true readings, and this is important in charting the results you want to achieve when applying the natural source. Dearest: Thanks, Julia. You're such a barrel of information :) Julia Elliott: :) Dearest: KateD, go ahead :) KateD: If I add soy to my home cooking, what's it going to do to my husband? LOL Dearest: heh Julia Elliott: Kate, it will protect him from Alzheimers disease, Kidney disease, PROSTATE disease and heart disease. Dearest: Julia, what about the non-believers? Why do you suppose they're so resistant to natural things like soy and other forms of phytoestrogens? You've certainly met enough of them :( Julia Elliott: Dear, I have met up with suppression in this area, mainly from the industries, such as the drug industry. Can you imagine the impact it would have if everyone found out that $ .85 a week may be able to prevent and possibly cure the health issues that we are discussing here? Some are just not up to date others don't want to be. But it is a choice that women should express. It is our bodies, and if there is a natural way to alleviate these problems then we should have the support of the Dr's and the industries that are involved here, not suppression. Dearest: Guess they only see us baby boomers as dollar signs, Julia Elliott: :( Julia Elliott: Dear, this is a major FACT!! Dearest: SAS, go ahead, please :) SASCREAT: Any benefit from using soy granules - making cookies, sprinkle on yogurt, etc. Julia Elliott: Sas, yes anywhere you use soy there is an improvement. You do have to define your needs and use accordingly. Dearest: RCH, go ahead, please :) RCHCTH: Testing via blood test, saliva test or how? Julia Elliott: RCHC, testing via blood work. I choose this method because it is the method that has been used since I began. I approached my Dr. about the saliva testing, and was told that it was a good test but, being that I have been doing the blood work all along that we should stick with it. Dearest: Catalina, go ahead, please. Catalina5: My confusion is about the tests. How accurate are blood tests? I do not know of saliva tests for estrogen other than estradiol. Julia Elliott: Cat, the blood tests have been consistent for me for years. Saliva testing is relatively new, but so far it holds promise. Dearest: Pazz, go ahead. Pazzeria: Why don't makers of soy products promote them like pharmaceutical companies promote estrogen? Why don't these companies promote how good products are for you? Julia Elliott: Paz, good question, mainly because they are still exploring the many areas of health that it affects, and it may be a year or two before conclusive results are in. There are some even on the web site that offer many studies that inform us of the benefits, and symposiums that I personally follow that inform us of these things, but I guess they are of a different world, one that is not jumping on the band wagon to make a buck. They want to be thorough and concise and sure with evidence supporting these issues. Pazzeria: thanks julia Dearest: Thanks, Julia.. excellent answers as always :) Red, go ahead :) Redfencer: Will using phytoestrogens help if you are perimenopausal? Julia Elliott: Red, yes it will. First it will possibly offer you protection from breast cancer, and it will help gain a balance of the hormones. Dearest: Ld2552, go ahead, please :) Ld2552: I have heard eating a lot of tofu (everyday) causes yeast infections. Is this true? thanks. Julia Elliott: LD, too much of anything is not good. First, have this evaluated by your Dr., and see if there is not another problem here then check out the rest of your diet and see that it is balanced. Tofu itself may not be the culprit, but I am not a Dr. and cannot really answer that. But, I understand that yogurt, eaten daily, with live cultures will, help combat the yeast infections. Dearest: MarSea, go ahead :) MarSea249: Just recently discovered soy beans sold frozen in the Japanese store. Is this the soy bean that you are speaking about? They kinda look like peas in a pod and are so delicious. Julia Elliott: Mar, they may have some value, but my area of knowledge lies in the dried soybeans, I cannot tell you the values present in a product that has been processed. I do not know what agents were used, but freezing, I understand, does not affect the properties greatly. MarSea249: Thanks Dearest: PAV, go ahead with your question for Julia Elliott, our soy source :) PAVinson: I was on Estrace and diagnosed with breast cancer in Feb., had surgery and radiation treatments. Tumor was estrogen receptor positive -- on Tamoxifen -- is it safe for me to use phytoestrogens? Julia Elliott: PA, Genistein, which is a compound found in the soybean, closely resembles Tamoxifen, but it does not have the side effects. Tamoxifen cannot be used for more than 5 yrs. Soy can be consumed forever. The structures are similar, they are often called "cousins". But, I would not use both, I would check with your Dr., and ask his opinion. Again, you are mixing two worlds, how are you going to tell which one is working? The local Cancer foundation director is encouraging his cancer patients to use soy in their diets, to go along with the prescribed treatment. The National Cancer Institute is presently working on using the genistein found in soy as a cancer drug. These tests are not conclusive yet, so I can't really tell you to use one over the other. Dearest: Fascinating... thank you, Julia. PAVinson: Thanks, Julia -- always check with oncologist before I take anything!! Julia Elliott: PA, check with your Dr. whether ONC or other Dearest: Best of health to you, Pav :) PAVinson: :) Dearest: Catalina, go ahead :) Catalina5: Have you ever made roasted soybeans (or soynuts)? Dearest: o/~ Soybeans roasting on an open fire o/~ Dearest: o/~ Tofu nipping at your nose ( g ) Julia Elliott: Cat, yes I have, I use the cooked soybeans, spread them on a cookie sheet add my favorite flavorings and bake - shaking them every so often til a golden brown... and of course we could use Dear's method. LOL Dearest: Haha! Catalina5: Right dearest. ( grin.) Julia Elliott: Nipping ? Julia Elliott: LOL Dearest: Yeah, nipping.. whatever. ( g ) Pazzeria: love your humor Dear! Dearest: Erica, go ahead :) EPiontek: What is the relationship of soy to cancer? Is it used as a cancer treatment? What kinds of cancer? or just cancer in general? Julia Elliott: EP, soy has been used lately to help treat and prevent cancer Genistein has the ability to seek out cancerous tumor cells and envelope them, preventing the ability to thrive by starving them via the blockage of capillary growth. The cell then eventually returns to normal. The cancers involved here are breast, endometrial THRV Dear: Ms Lizzie, please ask your question MsLizzieB: I came in late tonight, but I have read lately that the phytoestrogens in soy and other plants are too weak to do much good. Your opinion? Julia Elliott: MSL, just recently there was a news bulletin regarding the fact that low doses of estrogen (HRT) is successful in protecting women from menopausal problems. What we have in soy is the weak estrogen, which apparently, judging from this news clip, is enough to offer us the protection we need from the usual affects of menopause. MsLizzieB: That's good news. Thank you. Julia Elliott: You are welcome MS Dearest: Sure is :) TZ, go ahead, please :) TZvia1: I want to thank you Julia and Dearest for introducing me to soy. It has been very helpful. Julia Elliott: You are welcome TZ :) Pazzeria: applause Dearest: You certainly are, TZ... Julia Elliott: ::bowing:: TZvia1: Just be careful how you use it. My 14 year old has been enjoying smoothies every day and now her period is a week late. LOL Dearest: Uh oh, TZ Julia Elliott: TZ, have her checked by the Dr. soon!! It should not do anything but create a balance for her, TZ. TZvia1: Than maybe it's because she's only 14. I'm not concerned. Dearest: Erica, go ahead :) EPiontek: How long have they known about the use of soy to treat/prevent cancer? Is this a recent finding? Julia Elliott: EP, they have been testing for a while, in this area, and have more to explore. It is not a new issue, it is ongoing. EPiontek: How long is a while? the last 5-10 years? Julia Elliott: EP, don't know for sure, but go to the web - there must be some site that can offer you the actual amount of years. EPiontek: ok thanks Jelliot. Julia Elliott: You are welcome, if you need more info or a web site, email me. Dearest: EP (Erica), why the focus on cancer tonight? Wassup? EPiontek: Dearest, it just kinda piqued my interest when she said that soy had been used to treat cancer. My mom died of breast cancer you know, and I was just wondering how long they've known about soy as a cancer prevention measure/treatment. Dearest: Sorry, Erica :( Julia Elliott: EP, I am so sorry. It still hurts. Too bad we didn't tell her about soy :( We knew back then, just didn't have it fine tuned enough EPiontek: Tell me about it. Don't know if it would have helped her though, the cancer had already spread when they caught it. Julia Elliott: Might have been to late for anything at that point. Dearest: {{{{ Erica }}}}} EPiontek: thanks {{{{Dearest}}}} Dearest: Lizzie, go ahead, please. MsLizzieB: How long after eating soy, do the phytoestrogen effects last in the body? A day? Less? More? Julia Elliott: Ms I do know that if I skip the soybeans, for a week, that's ok , things happen... it's been almost 4 years I see the effects right away. Don't know how long they stay everyone's metabolism is different, so it is an individual thing. Dearest: KateD, go ahead, please. KateD: Who actually is doing the "testing". Anyone National and respected? Julia Elliott: National Cancer Institute for one. Many other scientists and Universities as well Dearest: Leseetsa, go ahead :) Leseetsa: If you eat low fat tofu, is the phytoestrogenic effect lessened? Julia Elliott: Hi Enid :) The properties are a bit effected, don't think it is that much to worry about though. I would think it is a good choice. Dearest: Lizzie, go ahead. MsLizzieB: What effects do you notice, if you skip the soy for a week? How can you tell in your body? Dearest: It gets SOY weak! :( MsLizzieB: heheheh Julia Elliott: Ms, my family for one :) and... I have these 2 pesky little coarse hairs that appear on my chin. When I see them, then I know that the balance is off. I conducted my own reverse study a while back and stopped for a week an a half and then went in for testing. The levels were in the cellar and with that I resumed and within a week, everything was ok. Dearest: Interesting. Even when I eat tons of soy/tofu, and take my Genistein and isoflavones, I still have those pesky little hairs :( Julia Elliott: Darn those things, some women have them no matter what they are on even the synthetic form of HRT. It may have something to do with their individual make-up. Dearest: I swear, I should buy stock in a tweezer company :( Ugh! Julia Elliott: LOL Dear, all of us should!! Dearest: DLLACY, go ahead. DLLACY45: I have **kidney** problems would the soy help. I really hurt. Where do i get it? Julia Elliott: DL, when you apply soy to your diet instead of animal protein you are saving wear and tear on your kidneys. They are overtaxed after consuming a meal high in animal protein. When you consume a meal high in soy protein, they have a much easier job, offering you a health benefit that you may be looking for in your later years as well. Dearest: Blush, go ahead :) THRV Blush: Any studies on the effects of soy and those pesky hairs? LOL I'll try ANYTHING! Julia Elliott: Blush!! LOL Dearest: Forget Tweezer Man (he's as useful as Safety Man) THRV Blush: chin replacement??? Pazzeria: LOL Julia Elliott: I do believe that is in the area of study regarding the estrogen sites that are deficient of estrogen. When this takes place the male hormones rush in to fill this void, resulting in male characteristics, such as these. THRV Blush: YES...my testosterone level is high Julia Elliott: This is an indication blush -- have to have a balance. Dearest: <~~ only male characteristic she wants is Tom Selleck's "Y" chromosomes sitting next to her "X" chromosomes :) THRV Blush: ROFL Julia Elliott: I hear that PAVinson: LOL Dearest Norlee: (LOL) MSilli1698: amen Dearest: Julia , thanks so much for joining us in Power Surge tonight and sharing your expertise in the area of soy and phytoestrogens.
