Claire Warga, Ph.D., Neuropsychologist, researcher, author of the much-discussed New York magazine article "Estrogen and the Brain," is the author of the groundbreaking book, Menopause And The Mind:
The Complete Guide to Coping with the Cognitive Effects of Perimenopause and Menopause Including Memory Loss, Foggy Thinking And Verbal Slips.
Are you between the ages of 35 and 60 and having trouble remembering your best friend's phone number? If this sounds familiar to you, take heart: Claire Warga's help and advice are on the way.
Dr. Warga identifies the "mind misconnect" syndrome that causes unsettling events during perimenopause and menopause, noting that they are not signs of imminent madness but a natural part of aging. She names this condition "WHMS: Warga's Hormonal Misconnection Syndrome." Drawing upon cutting-edge brain research and many never-before-described cases, Warga provides the first scientific explanation for why the symptoms occur and reveals how they can be reversed or alleviated. She provides a self-assessment test to help readers determine whether they are experiencing "mind misconnect" syndrome and offers important information and advice on estrogen replacement therapy as well as non-hormonal treatments that mimic estrogen's mind-boosting effects. Her self-screening test, symptom chart, and treatment measurement technique are important tools every woman can use to assess her condition and progress over time, with or without her ob/gyn.

Clinical Director of The Chestnut Hill Institute, Mira is also the author of numerous bestselling books including, "Too Good To Leave, Too Bad To Stay," "The Gift Of A Year," "The Emotional Energy Factor," "Everything Happens For A Reason," and her newest book, "The Weekend Marriage: Abundant Love in a Time-Starved World". In TWM, Mira talks about what is now the single most important reason people are having trouble with their relationships. We don't have time for love these days! Until now we haven’t understood how the lives we lead damage love, and we haven’t known what to do about it. How do you solve problems that come up between you if there’s no time to talk? How do you deal with anger if there’s no time to heal the hurts? How do you make good things happen and rebuild your relationship if you’re always using the little time you have to put out fires? How do you balance your needs and your partner’s? Mira's book provides all the insights and tools people need to protect their love and keep it strong. Our not having time for love is real. That means being in a relationship is a whole new ball game. But when you understand how to keep love healthy under these new conditions, you can return to the joy, intimacy, and abundant love you've been longing for. And it turns out it's a lot easier to do it right than to do it wrong. Five FREE copies of The Weekend Marriage were given away at the chat.

Dearest, Power Surge founder, discusses treatments for the symptoms of menopause. Some women feel as though they're losing their grip when their hormones, anxiety, depression, mood swings and hot flashes become so overwhelming. What can they do? Getting ALL the information and support women so desperately need during this challenging time is essential. If anyone tells you menopause isn't a challenging time of life, or everyone gets through it easily -- don't believe it! There are a host of issues from the physical, emotional, spiritual - the daily discomfort we can't always account for, nor can we always find remedies for. First, to find a remedy. Secondly, to learn acceptance of all these changes and creating a new mind-set. It's important to learn and practice relaxation techniques. Contrary to what many believe, the answers don't always lie in prescriptions, herbs or other methods of treatment, but in the way we approach the menopausal changes. Some of the simplest remedies can be tremendously effective -- long walks, quiet times to regroup emotionally, yoga, regular exercise -- 15 minutes 3x a week (it doesn't have to be strenuous exercise as long as it's consistent), time out with a good book, music and a cup of relaxing herbal tea, self-hypnosis, learning to pamper ourselves.
Pamela Peeke, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a Pew Foundation Scholar in Nutrition and Metabolism. Dr. Peeke is a medical commentator for CNN, and has appeared on Oprah, Larry King Live, The View, The Today Show, Dateline, PrimeTime, and others. She is the Chief Medical Correspondent for Nutrition and Fitness with Discovery Health TV. Dr. Peeke regularly contributes to numerous magazines and is medical director for the National Women's Health Resource Center. Author of numerous books, her bestselling, Fight Fat After Forty, presented groundbreaking research describing how chronic stress contributes to weight gain and threatens the length and quality of life after the age of forty, Dr. Peeke has become known as the scientist who first presented the scientific basis of the "stress-fat" connection to the American public, raising awareness about this potentially life threatening medical condition. Dr. Peeke's newest book is Body for Life for Women: A Woman's Plan for Physical and Mental Transformation. Peeke says, "Women are up to their ovaries in stress" as they try to care give everyone in their lives. Women are psychologically hard wired to make their quest for self care even more difficult. Peeke's experience in working with women of all ages proved to her that women have unique female traits that prevent them from keeping both physically and mentally fit. "I knew from my practice that the most successful plan for today's women would factor in the realities of a woman's whole life - the full-time job, the endless caregiving, the stress that comes with trying to do it all. And, most clearly of all, it would address the issues of emotional eating and poor body image-issues with which many women struggle on a daily basis." Five FREE copies of
Body for Life for Women were given away at the chat.

Carla R. Herrera is the publisher of 40+ -- an online magazine for midlife women. She has worked at several newspapers over the years, often in the capacity of graphic artist, or as a graphic consultant. Ms. Herrera has had numerous published articles in publications throughout California as well as numerous online publications. Her new book, The Contemporary Woman's Guide to Midlife: Essays and Resources for Life Transitions, takes the reader through the transitions of midlife. It’s an intimate portrait of a midlife woman, as well as a poignant, entertaining and educational relation of the midlife journey. Herrera questions, "Midlife brings with it many things - among them, for some women, a slap across the head! The bucket of cold water dumped on us during slumber. The metaphorical kick in the teeth. Beauty is one of those things. We can’t help but think about it because it’s right there in our face every day. We have to look in that mirror every morning and if the image of the woman staring back at us isn’t what we want, we have to question what it is we need to validate ourselves." FREE copies of "The Contemporary Woman's Guide To Midlife" were given away at the chat.

Phillip O. Warner, M.D., OB-GYN and Power Surge's very popular, Ask Dr. Warner was in private practice in Northern California for 32 years and is the former director of the Menopause Institute of Northern California. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the North American Menopause Society, and has done clinical research for the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Warner's special interest is in hormone imbalance therapy. The use of hormones when indicated, should be in the form of bioidentical hormones which are natural to the human female. He found that a number of his patients did not respond well to the standardized treatment. By individualizing treatment, Dr. Warner was able to dramatically improve his patients' quality of life. Much of Dr. Warner's career has been spent empowering women through education and individualized treatment to stay healthy with alternative therapies including nutritional supplements, herbal therapy, acupuncture and good dietary intake. These therapies, combined with weight control, exercise regimens, stress reduction and avoidance of toxic substances, can lead to a longer symptom-free post menopausal life.
Dr. Warner wrote: "The prescribing of oral Premarin by physicians for estrogen deficiency has evolved over the years as an automatic ‘Pavlovian’ response without any thought to giving individual treatment. Premarin is not a ‘natural’ substance in human consumption, nor is it the best choice of treatment despite its wide usage. The notion that a substance derived from horses is ‘natural’ to the human female is a tribute to 50 years of successful advertising." Dr. Warner's commitment to research, patient education, and individualized treatment, led to his current role providing specific consultation to patients. This enables women to receive individual answers to questions as Power Surge's, Ask Dr. Warner.

Sue Shellenbarger is the creator and writer of the The Wall Street Journal's "Work & Family" column. Shellenbarger has been writing or editing for The Wall Street Journal in various capacities for 25 years and also hosted a syndicated national "Work & Family" talk radio show on The Wall Street Journal Radio Network for two years. Her column has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and has received six major national awards. Her new book, The Breaking Point: How Female Midlife Crisis Is Transforming Today's Women. Long stereotyped as the province of men, today the midlife crisis is reported with greater frequency by women than men. Though the female midlife crisis travels many courses, Sue Shellenbarger found that most women's angst is propelled primarily by one powerful, repressed passion -- a part of oneself that begs for expression and reintegration. These archetypal drives -- Shellenbarger labels them the Lover, the Leader, the Adventurer, the Artist, the Seeker, and the Gardener -- reflect our core human capabilities to love, to create, and to learn. Cynthia Bulik, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist, is the William R. and Jeanne H. Jordan Distinguished Professor of Eating Disorders at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also a professor of nutrition in the School of Public Health and the director of the UNC Eating Disorders Program. In their new book, Runaway Eating: The 8-Point Plan To Conquer Adult Food And Weight Obsessions, Bulik and co-author, dietitian Nadine Taylor, shed light on the physical and psychological factors that drive runaway eating and show women how to regain a healthy relationship with food. Strategies are provided for dealing with problematic eating behaviors, particularly those that affect women in midlife. In understanding our eating disorders, the authors examine the underlying causes of runaway eating and address the complex array of factors responsible for its increase in recent years. More and more women, especially those between the ages of 35 and 60, are developing symptoms of runaway eating as they struggle to cope with the stresses of menopause, empty nest syndrome, caring for ailing parents, work overload, and cultural emphasis on youth and beauty. The authors also explain why some of us are more likely to develop runaway eating, and what keeps this behavior going -- even when there’s a desire to stop. Whether readers occasionally binge, restrict their food intake, exercise excessively, or purge, the authors offer help and hope. Their 8-Point plan for recovery offers simple strategies beginning with identifying the triggers that set off runaway eating, understanding the importance of eating on time, rerouting thinking, transforming moods, alleviating anxiety, defusing depression, finding alternate ways to deal with the factors that perpetuate runaway eating, managing menopausal symptoms and paring down perfectionism. Contrary to many books on sexuality and libido, Dr. Pertot's new book, Perfectly Normal: Living and Loving with Low Libido, rejects the current notion that a "healthy" sex life means frequent and exciting. Instead, individuals fall along a wide spectrum of interest in sex and low libido does not necessarily mean sexual dysfunction. If you feel like you wouldn't care if you never had sex again, you're not alone. The largest group of people seeking sex therapy is women who feel there must be something wrong with them because they don't have the urgent sex drive that they believe everybody is supposed to have. In Perfectly Normal, She believes that there are many ordinary and logical reasons why you might not want to have sex--and provides practical solutions to everyday sexual problems. She doesn't offer a cure for low libido but rather Dr. Sandra Pertot dismisses that theory. This is an approach for making your sex life the best it can be with what you've got. David Johnson, Ph.D., is an associate professor and chairman in the department of physiology at the College of Osteopathic Medicine, University of New England, Biddleford, Maine. Breakthrough medical tests can find dozens of deadly diseases before it's too late. But because of the state of modern healthcare (with insurers' red tape and doctors' busy schedules), most of us don't know that these tests are available let alone which ones to have, what they're called or how to ask them. That's all about to change. With the new book, Medical Tests that can Save Your Life: 21 Tests Your Doctor Won't Order ... Unless You Know To Ask, you'll learn how to determine if you're at risk for life-threatening conditions. Once you gauge your risk levels, Drs. Johnson and Sandmire teach you which test to request from your doctor and how to make sure you get them. Genetic tests for cancer risk, the latest blood tests for heart disease, and even older test like ultrasound have one thing in common: They can save your life. Dearest, Power Surge founder, discusses the importance of online support for women in their transitional years. When you feel as though you're losing your mind -- when your hormones, anxiety, depression, mood swings, hot flashes make you feel like you're losing your grip. What do you do? Getting the information, support and caring women so desperately need during this challenging time. If anyone tells you menopause isn't a challenging time of life, or everyone gets through it easily -- don't believe it! There are a host of issues from the physical, emotional, spiritual - the daily discomfort we can't always account for, nor can we always find remedies for. Some of the simplest remedies can be tremendously effective -- long walks, quiet times to regroup emotionally, yoga, exercise, 15 minutes with a wonderfully relaxing herbal tea, self-hypnosis, learning to pamper ourselves.

Endocrinologist, Kenneth R. Blanchard, M.D., is the author of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hypothyroidism: A Simple Plan for Extraordinary Results. If you're experiencing depression, fatigue, headaches, memory lapses, weight gain, hair loss, menstrual abnormalities, these are some of the symptoms that plague 13 million patients with hypothyroidism. Many patients with hypothyroidism go from doctor to doctor without being properly diagnosed. This is because the TSH blood test, considered the gold standard for diagnosis, is simply not an accurate indicator of hypothryoidism. Millions who are properly diagnosed find themselves undergoing often ineffective treatments for their disorder. Dr. Blanchard's groundbreaking treatment program draws on emerging research, medical facts, and three decades of clinical experiences as an endocrinologist. It's an individualized program that treats patients with the safe, but little used, T3 hormone in the best combination with the more common T4 hormone, as well as with nutritional advice and alternative treatments that really work! Five lucky participants received free copies of Dr. Blanchard's book. Read the transcript of Dr. Kenneth Blanchard's Jan. 8th visit.

Menopause and weight issues. Many women find themselves putting on the pounds during their peri and postmenopausal years. Sometimes it's due to hormonal imbalances. It might be the result of using hormone replacement therapy. It could be the result of a slower metabolism, not getting enough exercise, not adjusting their eating habits. During these stressful, transitional years, many women turn to comfort food to help them through the anxiety, depression and other uncomfortable symptoms often associated with menopause. Whatever the reason for weight gain, most of us realize that "diets" don't really work. If we do lose weight on a regimented diet, once we've reached goal, many women go back to their original way of eating and gain the weight back -- in fact, gain even more weight. We'll discuss the issues of emotional eating, sabotaging ourselves, what motivation one needs to stay with a successful weight loss program and the importance of exercise!
Dearest, aka Alice Stamm,, Power Surge founder, discusses the importance of online support and mentoring for women in their transitional years. Getting the information, support and caring they so need during this challenging time. If anyone tells you menopause isn't a challenging time of life, or everyone gets through it easily -- don't believe them! There are a host of issues from the physical, emotional, spiritual - the daily discomfort we can't always account for, nor can we always find remedies for. There's the acceptance of all these changes, creating a new mind-set, reinventing ourselves, a great deal of learning and practice on how to relax and get through what oftentimes seems more like a war zone than a natural part of a woman's evolution. Some of the simplest remedies can be tremendously effective -- long walks, quiet times to regroup emotionally, yoga, exercise, 15 minutes with a wonderfully relaxing herbal tea, self-hypnosis, learning to pamper ourselves.

How your lifestyle affects everything you experience during this rite of passage and how effective exercise can be in actually eliminating some of the most severe symptoms of menopause. In the end, everything comes back to what's "simple" and "natural."

Julia Elliott is more than a writer, researcher and lecturer. Julia is a crusader, a woman who has selflessly shared her extraordinary knowledge about the benefits of SOY / phytoestrogens, especialy for women during menopause. Julia says, "I went through an ordeal with the medications doctors gave me to help protect me during menopause. I did not like the side effects, so together with my new doctor, I explored the world of soy for this purpose. The results were perfect. Just what my body needed.
Because soy has the ability to only give you additional estrogen through its natural sources, it does not allow the body to turn it into estrogen unless you are lacking it. That is the beauty of it. If I have enough natural estrogen floating through my system already, it does not allow the system to turn it into more estrogen. But, if you are lacking estrogen, it will help supplement it. I think this is why the Asians have such sucess with keeping their menopausal and post meno pausal women free of the menopausal effects." Author of "Simply Soy: Nature's Own Antidote," Julia's passion for sharing information on natural treatments for menopause is never ending. Read the transcript of Julia Elliott's Jan. 16th visit.
