FIBROIDS are benign tumors in the uterus that can grow large enough to
cause bleeding, pain or infertility. They are the leading reason for over 300,000
hysterectomies performed each year. Scott Goodwin, M.D., co-author of
"What Your Doctor may Not Tell You About Fibroids," is a pioneer in fibroid
embolization treatment, and Michael Broder, M.D., is a renowned women's health
researcher. They explore all the lifestyle strategies, medical therapies and less
invasive forms of surgery that may be able to control fibroids without a
hysterectomy including:
Nutrional Therapy: the best foods to help reduce symptoms, increase
overall health and reduce new fibroid growth over time.
Exercise: the direct benefts of exercise in helping to lower the risk of
developing fibroids and alleviate pain
Alternative remedies: a look at Western herbs, acupuncture, Asian herbal
medicine, homeoptahy and home remedies
Conventional treatments: drugs that help control symptoms of pain
and bleeding, including NSAIDs, birth control pills, tranexamic acid,
and the progestin-releasing IUD
Promising Experimental Drug Studies: including RU-486, androgen therapy
and interferon
Procedures: myomectomy, laprascopy and uterine fibroid embolization (UFE),
the least invasive of the major interventions.
